Skin flooding – if you’re on the Tik Tok treadmill, you may well have heard of this new skincare trend that is taking the beauty industry by storm! If you’re not, then we’ve got you covered because while the term “skin flooding” is relatively new, the skincare regime behind it is definitely not!
Are you in need of serious hydration? Do you want a dewy, quenched complexion? If so, skin flooding could be just what you need! In this blog, we’ll explore what skin flooding is, how it works and what a GERnetic skin flooding routine might look like.
What is Skin Flooding?
As the term suggests, skin flooding involves saturating the skin with moisture. This technique gives the skin a plump, radiant, and hydrated appearance. This surprisingly simple technique involves layering several hydrating products onto your skin in order to provide deep, long-lasting hydration.
It essentially involves four simple main steps: gently cleansing your skin, spritzing on a mist, applying a serum or two, and lastly, moisturising your skin.
How Does Skin Flooding Work?
The key is in the layering and the order in which you use your products. The idea is to keep skin slightly damp throughout the routine. This helps products absorb deeply into the skin, sealing moisture in, and preventing trans epidermal water loss (TEWL).
A star product in any skin flooding routine is a humectant, such as Hyaluronic Acid, because it attracts and holds on to water molecules. Humectants deliver hydration and are like magnets, attracting water from the air or deeper within the skin. Did you know HA is a polysaccharide, a long chain of sugars naturally found in our skin? It’s an incredible ingredient that holds up to 1000 times its weight in water! You can, therefore, imagine how effective HA is for boosting skin hydration and elasticity. Applying it to slightly damp skin is the secret to making HA even more effective. This allows it to attract and retain water within the skin and binds moisture to the cells.
By carefully layering products, starting with thinner, water-based products, followed by thicker products with higher oil content, all interspersed with spritzes of hydrating toner, your skin will be “flooded” in luscious hydration. With all this moisture penetrating deeply into your skin cells, it can help to plump up fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin texture and give your complexion an overall glow.
Some of the key products that are often used in skin flooding include:
• Hydrating toners: Toners can help prepare your skin for the other products you’ll be applying and help balance your skin’s pH levels.
• Hydrating serums: Serums are lightweight, concentrated formulas that are designed to penetrate deeply into your skin. They can help to hydrate your skin and provide other benefits, such as brightening or firming.
• Hydrating essences: Essences are similar to serums but are even more lightweight and watery in texture. They can help to boost your skin’s hydration levels and provide other benefits, such as smoothing or refining. If you choose to use an essence it would be applied before your serum due to its light texture.
• Moisturisers: Moisturisers are the final step in a skin flooding routine and help seal in all of the hydrating ingredients you’ve applied. They can also help to provide a barrier against environmental stressors that can dehydrate your skin.
• Last but not least in any skincare routine, don’t forget to apply sunscreen at the very end.
How to Skin Flood with GERnetic
Step 1:
Glyco – GERnetic’s gentle cleansing milk is the start of any skincare routine. Ensuring your skin is perfectly clean before you begin will enhance the penetration of the nourishing ingredients. Apply to dry skin and massage well. Then wipe off with aloe vera tissues. Repeat the process until the tissues are clean after wiping. If you prefer, you can wipe it off with a damp cloth or fibrella wipes. Follow with Fibro to complete the GERnetic cleansing routine.
Step 2:
Demaquillant Douceur (or Gentle Cleanser) – The perfect spritzer! Use this to soothe and revitalise while keeping your skin damp for the following product application.
Step 3:
Choose your serum, depending on your skin’s needs:
- Cells Life – This extraordinary serum is one of my faves! Packed with Hyaluronic Acid, Cells Life will boost your skin’s ability to retain moisture and increase collagen and elastin production for youthful skin!
- Veinulo Special Plus – Containing Niacinamide (aka Vit B3), this powerful serum has calming and anti-inflammatory benefits. It is perfect for capillary issues and couperose.
- Or Mito Special Plus is rich in peptides and perfect for ageing skin to repair and regenerate.
Step 4:
Spritz with Gentle Cleanser again.
Step 5:
Now it’s time for your piece de resistance – that final seal to keep all the gorgeous moisture inside. Choose a super nourishing, rich moisturiser like Synchro, Cytobi or Cold Cream Mousse.
Step 6:
For extra flooding, you can do a last spritz here before applying your sunscreen – and voila, dewy, glowing skin ready to go!
Is This Trend for Everyone?
Skin flooding is certainly an interesting skincare trend to try out, particularly if you have dry or dehydrated skin. However, it’s important to note that skin flooding may not be suitable for everyone. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, for example, layering too many products on your skin could lead to clogged pores and breakouts.
Additionally, it’s important to choose the right products for your skin type and to pay attention to how your skin reacts to each product you apply. We highly recommend consulting with a skincare professional before beginning any new skincare routine.
GERnetic is no stranger to layering products in order to nourish and heal the skin – in fact it’s one of the things we are famous for! You could argue that GERnetic has been advocating skin flooding all along! What we do know is that this beauty trend is a simple and effective way to boost your skin’s hydration levels and achieve a more radiant complexion – and that’s always a good thing!
