[post_content] => A piece of chocolate cake (because it’s impolite to refuse somebody’s birthday cake); a few scoops of deliciously rich ice-cream (because it tastes like heaven); a little sugar in the cappuccino and some biscuits to go with it (because it is the perfect match); and a handful of sweets to settle the afternoon cravings (because you deserve a pick-me-up)... If these temptations sound familiar, you are not alone.

Over the recent years sugar has been singled out to be one of the main culprits linked to the overall decline in health in the developed world. As the sugar consumption rises, so do obesity rates and the number of diabetes sufferers. The cases of type 2 diabetes patients (ranging through all age groups) have more than tripled over the last three decades. These numbers are alarming, but it doesn’t stop there. More research is giving more insight into the widespread negative effects that processed sugars have on our wellbeing.

So what does sugar do and why is it bad for us?

Common table sugar is composed of fructose, the sugar found naturally in fruit, and glucose. While glucose is metabolised in the cells of the body and converted into instant energy, fructose is mainly processed in the liver. There it is converted into fats called triglycerides, most of which stay in the liver, eventually leading to dysfunctions and what is commonly called a ‘fatty liver’. Whatever enters the bloodstream will increase the insulin production in the pancreas and over time trigger high blood pressure, fat accumulation around the waist and can lead to type 2 diabetes and an increased risk of heart disease. Glucose provides the body with instant energy, but unfortunately lacks valuable nutrients. It causes a metabolic imbalance which the body is forced to address by retrieving vitamins, minerals and other essential elements from ‘storage’ within its own tissues. Regular intake of sugars can quickly deplete the body’s own resources and cause deficiencies. And any glucose, which is not transformed into energy, is converted into fat cells and stored in the tissues. New research has proven that sugar causes cancerous cells to grow and metastasize. Cancer cells feed primarily on glucose. Future cancer screening could rely heavily on scanning the body for glucose accumulations. The body responds to sugar consumption by producing certain hormones which feed cancer cells with even more glucose, speeding up their growth. Sugar can also affect the health of the largest organ in the body, our skin. Major issues include: Glycation – occurs when glucose enters the bloodstream and travels to the skin tissue, it attaches itself to collagen fibres, making the collagen hard and inflexible. This results in loss of suppleness and elasticity and speeds up the ageing process, allowing lines and wrinkles to manifest themselves quickly. Inflammation – when blood sugar levels rise, this may result in inflammation of our organs, the skin included. As an immune response, the body reacts with skin rashes or cysts in the form of eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis. Other reactions can be hypersensitivity (which results in redness), poor digestion and poor elimination. Acneic breakouts – due to the inflammatory response our body cannot eliminate toxins through the normal metabolism. Many of these toxins then build up in the cells and are eventually discarded as excretions through the skin, appearing as pimples, cysts, pustules and rashes.

What are the alternatives?

The sweet toothed among us needn’t despair, there are healthy sugar alternatives available that can be used in food preparation: Stevia is a green leafy plant that is capable of adding sweetness to any dish. It is available in different forms in your health food shop and is 100% natural. Coconut sugar is unlike any other sugar. It is the only one that is truly low GI. It is also rather sweet, which means small quantities will go a long way. Agave syrup is derived from the agave plant, it is a healthy alternative that can be used with any dish that needs a little sweetening. A 200gm mango contains up to three times the recommended daily intake of Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Vitamin C is required in the formation of collagen, a protein that gives structure to bones, cartilage, muscle and blood vessels, and keeps you looking young! Vitamin C also aids the absorption of iron, and is an excellent antioxidant. Mangos are also rich in beta-carotene and are a good source of fibre and potassium. Beta-carotene helps protect the body against disease and fights the signs of ageing by assisting with the growth and repair of cells, tissues and skin. Mangoes are a great snack for the weight-conscious as half a mango contains only about 248kj (60 calories). Mangoes are also low GI, to keep you feeling full for longer.* Our smoothie is the ideal way of enjoying this springtime treat!

Dehydration (transepidermal water loss) occurs when water evaporates from the skin, leading to dryness and wrinkles. There are three main causes of dehydration:

1. Chemical: such as alcohol, coffee, cigarettes.

2. Diseases: like kidney or liver problems.

3. Environmental: such as humidity, chilly winds, change of temperatures, heating systems and air conditioning.

Epidermal dehydration is directly affected by the lack of fluid intake. Drink, drink and …then drink some more water!

Consuming eight glasses a day and your skin is still dry? In that case, Gernétic’s Cells Life Revitalizing Serum will improve hydration levels of the epidermis and take action at a cellular level, quenching the skin from the moment of applications, plumping and minimising lines as it goes.

Cells Life is concentrated mix of essential proteins, peptides, proteoglycans and hyaluronic acid. It saturates the skins surface with moisture immediately re-hydrating while enhancing greater quantities of moisture retained by the skin, promoting a youthful appearance.

Perfect for all skins, particularly those who battle with constant dehydration, Cells Life alleviates dryness and that feeling of tightness, leaving your skin feeling replenished, revitalised and more receptive to further moisturising treatments. It’s also the perfect potion for the delicate eye area where fine lines first appear. A perfect springtime remedy!
