HOW DOES ALCOHOL AFFECT MY SKIN?

Alcohol dehydrates your body generally, including the skin, which is your body’s largest organ. Dehydrated skin is dull, lifeless and prone to deeper wrinkles. Alcohol also causes the blood vessels to expand rapidly, retracting only when the alcohol is flushed from the body.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN OVER TIME?

Many drinkers notice that their skin appears red in colour and that the reddish areas increase as they continue drinking. Excessive drinking can lead to the development of telangiectasias or chronic dilation of the capillaries. Alcohol causes the capillaries to dilate quickly and stops them from returning to normal. After some time, they’ll stop dilating completely and become more fragile. This leads to the skin turning red some or all of the time. Rosacea is a disorder that causes the skin to take on a red tone, and those who drink will notice that the alcohol makes this worse.

WHAT ELSE CAN I EXPECT IF I DRINK
TO EXCESS?

Alcohol can also cause your face to look bloated and puffy and to experience break outs. You might find it bloats your stomach too. And then there’s cellulite; many believe the toxins in alcohol contribute to its build up. Alcohol also depletes the body of vitamins and minerals that it regularly needs, especially Vitamin A. Vitamin A contains antioxidants, which help the skin look healthy.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP MYSELF?

Dehydration can be helped by drinking large quantities of water when you know you are going to drink, and then again afterwards. But long term, the best thing you can do is to only drink occasionally and never to excess or over prolonged periods of time. The skin can bounce back, but don’t push it so far that you can’t undo the damage. [post_title] => Is your skin hungover? How does stress affect my skin?

Nowhere in the body are the effects of stress more obvious than on the skin. It is a key driver of many common clinical skin conditions. Stress triggers the release of hormones that activate cells producing histamine and various other inflammatory compounds. The effect is an increased itching sensation that in turn inflames pre-existing skin conditions. For example, when we are stressed our skin flushes, we sweat more and conditions like eczema and psoriasis are often exacerbated.

What lifestyle changes can I make to help?

Stress management techniques are crucial to effectively manage skin conditions. Meditation, for example, has been found particularly effective in improving skin conditions like psoriasis. Try to improve your time management by using goal setting and daily/weekly planners to help keep on top of things. Add regular exercise to your routine, including relaxation exercises like tai chi or yoga. Remember to create 'me' time, to do things that you enjoy.

What diet changes can I make to help?

A diet rich in fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables as well as foods high in essential fatty acids, the good fats, from cold pressed linseed and safflower oils is a great way to ensure you’re consuming your recommended daily intake of omegas 3 and 6. Drink plenty of water, fresh vegetable and fruit juices and herbal teas. Wholemeal bread and cereals will bring you plenty of fibre as well as some vitamins of the B group. Avoid sweet, sugary, fatty, fried and refined processed foods and drinks. Along with a balanced diet, taking supplements such as evening primrose and probiotics can help rebalance your immune and digestive systems and greatly improve your skin condition.

For your skin to stay supple, radiant and protected it needs to receive certain nutrients from the food you eat. What you’re looking for are key beneficial vitamins such as A, B complex, C, D, E and F, minerals such as selenium and zinc, various enzymes, essential fatty acids, amino acids and antioxidants. Start with Breakfast. A wonderful way to boost your skin first thing in the morning is a simple bowl of porridge. Oats are very high in soluble fibre, and complex carbohydrates, as well as iron, manganese, phosphorous, calcium, vitamins B & E, and silicon.  Silicon helps maintain collagen levels, to keep your skin plump. Top with blueberries which contain powerful antioxidants, and honey. Honey is a nutrient-rich alternative to refined sugar, which is believed to contribute to skin ageing. What could be a better start for your skin on a cold winter morning? Hiding behind winter clothes as your skin dries out and your weight increases? Reaching for an extra cup of coffee, a chocolate bar or an energy drink every time you need an energy boost? If you have answered yes to any (or all!) of these, then it’s time to make some changes. Getting your kicks with caffeine or remaining too sedentary during the winter months can play havoc with your energy levels and the condition of your skin. By making the following changes to your daily life during winter you can ensure you emerge into spring like a butterfly - not a caterpillar!
  1. Eating protein and fibre-rich foods will help keep your cardio-vascular, muscular and digestive systems in good health. For protein try lean read meats, seafood, lentils, beans, eggs and nuts. Fibre is abundant in whole grains, berries, lentils, beans, oats and peas.
  2. Maintain a steady blood sugar level. A good way to do this is by eating small, frequent meals rather than piling your plate high three times a day, and make sure these include complex carbohydrates and protein. Complex carbohydrates foods are basically those in whole grain form such as whole grain breads, oats, muesli and brown rice.
  3. Ensure your vitamin B and iron levels are stocked up. Vitamin B has an impact on the health of your skin and muscle tone. Iron is responsible for red blood cells as well as metabolism, immunity and mental sharpness. Eat plenty of whole grains, dairy products and egg yolks for vitamin B and fish, poultry and red meat for both proteins and iron. If you follow your meal with orange or grapefruit juice (for vitamin C), you’ll increase absorption of the iron in your food.
  4. Rather than curling up with endless cups of hot chocolate and coffee, ensure you keep as hydrated as you would in the summer with water and green tea. Avoid alcohol where possible as it can dehydrate, cause sleep disruptions and is associated with vitamin B deficiencies.
  5. Keep moving! Every bit of exercise counts towards a better metabolism and healthier skin, so even if you can’t manage 30 minutes a day in one stretch, try doing 10 minutes three times a day. You’ll be amazed at how different you feel - and look!

Thyme tea

INGREDIENTS

1 cup boiling water 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (1 teaspoon fresh)

METHOD

Place thyme in a cup and fill with boiling water. Cover and allow to infuse for 10 minutes. Strain and serve, with honey and/or lemon, if you like. Makes one serving. In fact, irritation and dryness may well be signs that your Acid Mantle could already do with a little nurturing.

So what is so important about this Acid Mantle anyway?

The Acid Mantle is vital to the health and well being of our skin and hair. When functioning efficiently, the Acid Mantle provides skin with a natural protective layer by blending an oily substance secreted by the Sebaceous glands and a salty substance secreted by the Eccrine sweat glands. These secretions are then further acidified by other secretions from normal flora of the skin to create an acidic environment with a pH of between 4.5 and 5.5. (pH is a universal measuring system that compares the strength of acids and bases at the skin level.) This allows the protective layer of the epidermis, comprised of tightly knit cells like shingles on a roof known as Keratinocytes, to act as an efficient barrier. Any disruption to the skin's natural pH such as over exposure to indoor heating, nutritional deficiencies caused by an imbalanced diet, excessive sweating and stresses and the most common of all: the usage of aggressive skin-exfoliating products, can prove quite damaging to the Acid Mantle. If the pH becomes elevated, ie. more alkaline, this greatly interferes with the protective barrier resulting in symptoms such as dehydration, roughness, irritation, blocked or enlarged pores. The skin also starts to become defenseless and susceptible to environmental damage. As cells pull further apart, breaks become exposed and render the skin more vulnerable to bacterial invasion. What was once a strong shield-like structure, can transform into a welcoming environment for bacteria to flourish. If the skin pH exceeds 6.5, bacterial invasion increases dramatically and a variety of skin disorders can result, such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis.

So how to achieve a pH fabulous skin?

The first place to start is with a quality pH balanced skincare. Gernetic skincare is packed full of vital and essential nutrients. Beware of products with high dosages of Vitamin A or C, they may look and sound scientific but are actually harmful to the skin. Gernetic nurtures the Acid Mantle with proteins and amino acids that stimulate skin cells’ natural regenerative and protective functions. Ensure your diet is rich in essential fatty acids, and try to reduce stress through exercise, meditation or yoga. A well-balanced lifestyle, leads to well balanced skin. After all achieving healthier skin is as simple as understanding and following proper skin chemistry and our natural biology. [post_title] => The Exfoliation Myth [post_excerpt] => With the chill and dryness of winter upon us, your skin may be experiencing dryness, dehydration, roughness, irritation, and blocked or enlarged pores. DRY

DON’T forget to drink water. You may not feel as thirsty in winter as you do in summer but it
is essential to keep your skin hydrated. Avoid caffeine-based drinks that can lead to dehydration and select herbal teas instead. Opt for super-nourishing creams enhanced with amino acids, peptides, proteins, vitamins and trace elements. Try Gernétic’s nutritive cream Synchro or super-nourishing Cytobi. These products not only leave your skin glowing, they also protect and nurture your skin’s membrane.

FLAKY

DON’T take long hot showers and baths. Hot water makes the skin lose moisture and affects the protective skin acid mantle. Try to take shorter showers using warm water and maintain soft, supple skin with Gernétic Shower Gel. Enriched with marine sediments and essential minerals to gently cleanse, it maintains the skin’s natural pH. Follow with Gernétic’s Softening Body Milk, a rich nourishing cream that hydrates, moisturises and firms.

ITCHY

DON’T turn up the heating. Heating systems can cause havoc with the moisture levels in the
air. Using a humidifier will help boost moisture levels and prevent the skin cells from drying up and feeling itchy.

[post_excerpt] => Many of us unwind over a glass of wine, or celebrate with a cocktail on a Friday night, and most of us know the pain of a hangover, but have you thought of the consequences of alcohol consumption on your skin?
