Exercise: Top 5 Tips To Get You Motivated!
Motivating yourself to exercise regularly can be seriously tough, especially if you haven’t exercised for a while. So, here are our top 5 tips to help you find your mojo again and get back on the treadmill (so to speak)!
1. Acceptance
If you want to lose weight you have to exercise – there is no magic pill or surgical procedure that can do it for you. Getting motivated to exercise starts with your mindset. Once you start to accept that exercise is vital to your long term health and well-being and is something you need to find time for, then you’re halfway there! Think of it like brushing your teeth – even if you don’t feel like it, you’d always find time to brush your teeth wouldn’t you? Exercise is another vital habit for health that we need to embrace.
2. Find your own way to exercise
Let’s face it sweaty gyms are not everyone’s cup of tea! If you’re going to stick to an exercise routine, you need to find something that you enjoy – or shall we say not something that you truly loathe! It could be a spin class, a brisk walk, dancing, a sport – anything that gets you out of breath and your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes every day. There is growing evidence to show that short bursts of intense exercise may actually be better for you that long routines. HIT or High-Intensity Training is an exciting way to burn fat and get fit in a shorter space of time – perfect for those of us who are chronically time-poor! Think outside the box, do your research and make it your own
3. Set a goal
Our sedentary lifestyles and lack of time are the biggest barriers we face when it comes to exercising. Remember your mindset? This is about you – your health, being the very best version of yourself and even setting examples to your kids. We need to stop with the excuses and prioritise exercise for health. Setting a goal is a great way to stay motivated and on track. Sign up to a 5km run and schedule that training in, or simply mark in the calendar when you want to fit into those gorgeous jeans you used to wear!
4. Enlist a friend
People power – it truly works. Find a buddy you can workout with – you are so much more likely to get out of bed when you know someone is counting on you. Or get social with a group fitness class – surround yourself with people who want to get healthy and who can support you – it’s a powerful motivator.
5. Technology can help!
It’s probably true that the rise in technology has got us into this situation in the first place! However, technology does have its bonuses. There are so many free apps for your phone to help you with your exercise journey, there are devices to track your fitness all the way, there are tons of free exercise videos on the internet. If you can’t yet face going out into the open to exercise, you can begin at home with your own personal instructor blaring out from your TV! Use what you have at your fingertips.
Change doesn’t happen overnight – it begins with a light bulb moment and can evolve over time. Be kind to yourself and start slowly – take a walk every day even if it’s just around the block. Any amount of exercise is a good thing. Once you have adjusted your routine and are finding those moments each day to be good to your body, you will soon feel a renewed energy, a happier and clearer mind and you will be so on track to reach your goals. Put yourself at the top of the priority list and remember that getting active is vital for a long and fulfilling life.
